February 7th —March 1st, 2015
Opening Saturday, Feb 7, 6:00–9:00PM

We are pleased to present Stubborn Truths, our first solo exhibition of the work of Boyce Cummings.Investigating the dichotomies of Man/Animal, Machine/Nature, Realism/Abstraction, Old/New, Complete/Incomplete, High Brow/Low Brow, Losing/Winning, Boyce Cummings utilizes a combination of hardedge abstraction, traditional representational painting, graffiti, cartoon and graphic elements pushed through a surrealist filter to achieve stunning results. Cummings expansive compositions are in constant flux, being pulled apart and reconnected simultaneously.

Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, Cummings has a close connection to nature, which is apparent in his work where animals and other natural elements intermingle with urban elements that are more representative of his current home and working environment, New York City. Cummings paintings, using a visual language of symbols, communicate a highly personal mythic narrative, yet are able to speak to universal themes of creation, struggle, oppression, decay, destruction and rebirth.

Boyce Cummings received his BFA from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago, and MFA from The School of Visual Arts, has exhibited in galleries and museums nationally and abroad including New American Talent 19 at ArtHouse Texas and was awarded The Rome Prize in 2006, as well as grants from ARTISTSPACE in NYC and The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and was the recipient of the Stacey S. Sussman traveling fellowship from the School of Visual Arts.
